We are our environment

“No longer restrained by financial imperatives, the modern homeowner demands more than a furnished space to live in, no matter how fashionable or trendy.  He wants a home in which he has decided to live not only by means of the ‘virtual nature of image’ but which includes the ‘material nature of objects’.  His home and possibly his office is his personal space and ideally would be tailored to his personal requirements.  The production line cannot cater for him, his requirements are not, literally, ‘run of the mill’.  A piece of furniture from a designer/maker implies a deep involvement with the commissioning process – a two-way consultation – How long? How high? What wood? Which finish?  It carries with it a life and experience of the maker, his design ideas, his environmental considerations, his labour, his love, the nature of the materials and his treatment of them and his interaction with the client.  At the end of the day, a unique object, a product of maker and client’
