BLOTT WORKS is artist/engineer Dan Morrison who creates useful sculptures with a mechanical aesthetic that bring together ideas taken from our natural and our industrial worlds.

All work is designed to introduce a sense of ritual or play into everyday activities with the overall aesthetic drawing on the beauty of industrial materials, and the charm of simple machine assemblies.

The sculptures often have a functional aspect, such as lighting an area or telling the time, and are hand-engineered by Dan as limited editions in the BLOTT WORKS workshop in the north of England.

“I am very pleased that BLOTT WORKS are exhibiting with us again this year.  Their work offers something completely different with many of the pieces having fabulously smooth mechanisms that allow them to move and come to life. I always enjoy watching for the reactions as people experience BLOTT WORKS pieces for the first time, they continually bring a smile to the face of those visitors who take the time to ‘play’ with the pieces.” (Julie Heap – Event Co-ordinator)

BLOTT WORKS launched their Beacon floor-standing lamp at the Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design SELECTION show in London in May and it was incredibly well received.

This sculptural lamp, handmade from oak, aluminium, copper and concrete, pulls together ideas of stemmed flowers, burning matches, and clasped hands, using the soft-industrial style familiar in other mechanically-inspired creations from BLOTT WORKS.

When in its closed position this piece acts as a standard lamp, throwing out exuberant light and shadow patterns; when in its open position it operates as an uplighter, bouncing light from the ceiling for a more ambient effect.

The Beacon floor-standing lamp along with a smaller table top version will be on show at the main exhibition this month in Cheltenham.
