Eleanor Lakelin - Bowl

Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design

18th - 27th August 2018

Eleanor Lakelin is due to exhibit some pieces from her 'Contours of Nature Series'.  Eleanor explains "This series of work is the result of finding a horse chestnut tree in 2011 that was 300 years old. It is registered as having been planted in 1710 at Boughton House in Northamptonshire, home of the Duke of Buccleuch. It was heavily burred and after chipping off the bark with small chisels and picks, a world of wild undulations and spikes was discovered underneath. The forms evolved slowly over a period of months as I worked on them and experimented with the material. The pieces are turned on a lathe and then carved with both machine and hand tools.  Having bleached and carved ash as a furniture-maker and inspired by the work of sculptor Michael Peterson in the seventies, I wanted to evoke the natural processes of weathering. Sandblasting and then bleaching gave the pieces the texture and patina of fossils or bones I was looking for."

Eleanor Lakelin was Craft & Design's Highly Commended Newcomer at the British Craft Trade Fair 2013, they stated that Eleanor's "empathy for the wood that she works with, its qualities and features, is reflected in the wooden bowls and sculptural forms that she skilfully creates."

We look forward to experiencing Eleanor's pieces in August.
