Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design

18th - 27th August 2018

Erica Sharpe - Artist

Born to a botanist and zoologist in rural Somerset, Erica has been a professional jeweller and artist for nearly 30 years and has exhibited her stunning and unique jewellery with us over the last eight years.

When not working in precious metals, she paints and draws in water colours and graphite. The wilderness, natural environment, landscape, flora and fauna are intrinsic to her life and work. Forever exploring, trekking and wandering, she creates from a place of immediacy and mindful observation rather than preconceived ideas. Finalist in the 2014 David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year, Erica’s watercolours and drawings explore the authenticity of a subject, revealing the often unseen story, and key elements of its nature.

“Erica’s jewellery is always so beautifully presented, often in boxes decorated with her own watercolour paintings that highlight the inspiration or story behind the piece.  Having had the pleasure of seeing a number of Erica’s watercolours and charcoal drawings I was keen to see more.  We invited Erica to create some larger versions of her artwork for the walls of the exhibition this year, the photos that she has sent us are fantastic and we can’t wait to see them in situ in the stunning setting of Thirlestaine Long Gallery.” (Julie Heap, Exhibition Co-ordinator)

The pieces that Erica has created for this year’s exhibition are inspired by the techniques used in cave paintings and are mixed media (including charcoal and natural pigments) on canvas. Four of the pieces are named ‘Lungta’ from the Tibetan mythical ‘Wind Horse’ which represents the freedom of human soul and its appearance is supposed to bring peace, wealth, and harmony.   Horses are a fitting subject for Cheltenham in general but those of you familiar with Thirelstaine Long Gallery may have also noticed the plaster freeze of the chariot horses running across the end wall.
