Thomas Whittingham - 'Grizedale' Console Table

Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design

Thomas Whittingham - 'Grizedale' Console Table

This year we see the return of Thomas Whittingham a winner of the Alan Peters Award from 2013.  This Award was designed to recognise excellence in every aspect of design and craftsmanship which was the philosophy of Alan Peters OBE.

Thomas is returning this year in his own right with his 'Grizedale' Console Table.  This piece is based heavily on the 'Whinlatter' desk which he exhibited last year as one of the Alan Peters Award winners. He has redesigned this piece as a console table using the same layout for the legs and use of two contrasting timbers from the same species (European oak and European brown oak). The brown oak that Thomas has managed to source for this piece is simply stunning and can really be appreciated on the book-matched table top and drawer fronts. Incorporating push to open drawer slides removed the need for handles allowing the branch design to really stand out.

When designing furniture Thomas has told us that he likes to keep the form of the piece simple but interesting. "I think that a few clever little design details can go a long way to help create something that is both functional and unique. Another added benefit of designing in this way is that the grain in the timber becomes a real focal point. Having taken the time to carefully source and select the timber the finished piece needs to complement and not detract from the natural beauty of the material."

We asked Thomas why he chose to return to Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design again this year, and he told us: "I'm returning to CCD this year as last years exhibition was a great experience for me as a new designer. The opportunity to talk to other designer-makers and potential clients, who are as passionate about fine furniture as I am, rarely comes around. This combined with the carefully considered layout within the Thirlestaine gallery makes CCD a highlight of my year."
