The late Alan Peters OBE dedicated his life to the furniture industry in the workshop, through writing and also by teaching and this award continues his legacy by encouraging and supporting the next generation of furniture designer-makers at the start of their fledgling careers.
This year’s winners, Christopher Cooper, Freya Whamond and Finn James, are every bit as impressive as those that have gone before them, whilst also having the added accolade that they have been placed at the front of the largest ever number of applicants that the award has attracted.
They do great credit to their respective tutors at Rowden Atelier Woodworking School, Rycotewood Furniture Centre and Williams and Cleal Furniture School and they will now be joining around 70 of the finest craftsmen and women in the British Isles in Cheltenham this August.
The Award was judged by Keith Newton - apprentice of and maker for Alan Peters for 19 years, Jeremy Broun – pioneering furniture designer-maker and Jason Heap – award winning furniture designer-maker and director of Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design.
The judges were hugely impressed with the standard of entries that have set the bar extremely high for future years. For the judges’ comments and photographs of the pieces please see the main Alan Peters page.
“The judges were particularly impressed this year by three very different pieces. We felt that each, in their own way, showed good ambition, offered interest both visually and in their construction, indicated a good understanding of the materials used and demonstrated accomplished workmanship” said award judge and director of Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design, Jason Heap.
All three winning pieces will be exhibited at this year's exhibition from 19th-28th August 2017.
